Transforming My Nephew’s 10 Square Meter Bedroom: A Design Journey with Lumion!

In this blog post, we’re transforming my nephew’s compact 10 square meter bedroom, showcasing how to maximize space while maintaining style and functionality. Originally an entertainment room, this space now serves my rapidly growing 11-year-old nephew, who needs areas for sleeping, studying, and playing. Let’s explore how we can redesign this small room into a stylish and practical haven using advanced tools like Lumion and 3D modeling.

The Challenge: Maximizing Space

Designing a functional layout within the confines of a small room presents unique challenges. We need to incorporate:

  • A comfortable bed
  • A study area
  • Storage for clothes and toys
  • Space for entertainment

Step 1: Measuring with Precision

To begin the redesign, I utilized Polycam, a powerful app that creates accurate 3D models. See here how this app allows you to easily map the room’s dimensions by pointing your phone at the corners and edges, generating a precise floor plan and a detailed 3D model. The real-time visualization helps identify how the room can be reconfigured effectively.

Step 2: Designing with Lumion

Once the 3D model was created, I imported it into Lumion, a leading software for architectural visualization. Lumion provides an immersive experience, allowing you to visualize the room in realistic detail. As I entered the virtual space, I noted how cramped it felt and recognized the need for a smarter layout.

Step 3: Planning the Furniture Layout

To ensure the redesign is both stylish and functional, I chose furniture from Ikea for its affordability and ease of assembly. Follow the plan here:

  1. Wardrobe: I selected a customizable PAX wardrobe that fits neatly in the entrance corridor, providing ample storage without being bulky.
  2. Bed: The versatile Brimnes bed serves as both a sofa and a full queen-size bed, offering additional storage for bedding.
  3. Desk Space: Utilizing BESTA units, I designed a combined study and entertainment area, leaving room for a desk and a comfortable chair.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

To enhance the aesthetics and functionality, see here how I added:

  • Acoustic panels to reduce noise and elevate the room’s design.
  • A TV for entertainment, allowing my nephew to enjoy movies and games comfortably.

The total cost for this renovation is approximately $2500, making it an affordable yet impactful transformation.

Conclusion: A New Era for a Small Space

The redesigned room now offers a modern, clutter-free environment tailored to my nephew’s needs. With the new layout and furniture, he has designated areas for studying, playing, and relaxing. See the final result here.

This redesign not only showcases the power of 3D realism in interior design but also highlights how effective tools like Lumion and Polycam can facilitate a successful transformation. Embrace creativity in small spaces, and watch how a little planning can lead to incredible results!
