Room Makeover Challenge: Fitting a Full Setup into 10m²

Room Makeover Challenge

When life throws you a curveball, sometimes you find yourself back in your childhood bedroom, with a new set of needs. That was the case for a friend of mine who had just moved back home after a major life shift. The challenge? Fit a gaming setup, workspace, bed, and storage into just 10 square meters, without sacrificing comfort or style.

Small Space, Big Demands

This wasn’t just any room makeover. It had to balance productivity, entertainment, and rest, all while feeling cozy, modern, and clutter-free. Plus, my friend needed ample storage for clothes and collectibles, especially his growing Star Wars collection.

The Design Process

Starting with measurements, I modeled the space in Modo, but quickly realized the benefits of switching to SketchUp, especially with its live sync with Lumion. Using Lumion, I was able to bring this tiny room to life with stunning 3D realism, simulating lighting, textures, and layout changes before anything was purchased.

Key Transformations

  • Wardrobe Swap: Replaced a bulky wardrobe with IKEA’s shallower PAX system, which maximizes storage while freeing up floor space.
  • Bed Repositioning: Moved the bed under the window and chose a daybed with built-in drawers for bedding storage.
  • Workspace Redesign: Used a corner standing desk to create a flexible work/gaming station, paired with a monitor arm and pegboards for gear.
  • Entertainment Zone: A wall-mounted TV above a dresser that doubles as a PS5 stand and clothing storage.
  • Collectibles Display: Kept his beloved BILLY shelf and added greenery and Star Wars decor to reflect his personality.
  • Lumion Rendering: Every element was visualized with high-quality 3D rendering to ensure everything worked in harmony.

Realism Through Lumion

Lumion played a key role in presenting the design with realistic lighting, shadows, and materials, helping both me and my friend visualize how each piece would fit and function in real life. From reflective surfaces to soft shadows, Lumion’s 3D realism brought the concept to life long before any physical changes were made.

Final Thoughts

This room makeover turned a tight, cluttered space into a smart, multi-functional environment. Using affordable IKEA furniture, thoughtful layout planning, and powerful visualization with Lumion, we transformed 10m² into a highly personalized living and working space.
